Skills needed for Public Relations

To be a PR practitioner it requires a mixed bag of skills ranging from good technical skills to analytical to soft skill and interpersonal skills. So in limited word we can say jack of all trades is what we need a PR person to be. From this vast list I want to list down few ones:
  • Analytical and Problem solving skills:   While planning a PR strategy the ability that counts the most is that how do you analyze the existing situation and come up with an innovative and effective solution
  • Ability to Execute effectively: Only planning does not solve the purpose, execution is equally important. For mid size to small companies cost is an important factor whereas for the big houses quality and time are the key parameters. So to a PR professional you must know the answer to the question “HOW”
  • Processing Knowledge: Knowledge is the key to success. You have to use the available data and information and convert it into knowledge. And, your ability to process the gained knowledge for a better utilization in the PR campaign will change the game for you.
  • Technical Skills: The society is being driven by technology and social media. Keep yourself updated with the latest technology and related events. It includes technologies related to internet, online and offline media, social media etc.
  • Communication and Presentation Skills: Your communication skills must be very strong, so must be your presentation skills.
  • Ethics: Ethics matter a lot in the PR industry so should be your ethical perspective.
  • Understanding the connectivity: In the existing industrial and social scenario, the ability to understand the interconnectedness between political, social, economic and ethical events counts.
  • Out of Box Thinking: Above all, creativity and out of box thinking is a must.
